embarking on a new year at GCA
For the first assignment we were given a week to finish a painting. At GCA we get used to taking at least a month on our cast drawings and figure work, so this was a much needed kick in the pants!

Side by side with the work of contemporary artists Nancy Campbell, Edith Marcik, Kate McGloughlin, Lauren Sansaricq, Sue Story, Ruth Wetzel and others, this exhibit traces the continuity of the profound influence of the founders of the Hudson River School of Art on the women of that period and to the present day.

“Artists Stephen Gjertson, Kirk Richards and Steve Armes represent two important links to 19th-century Academic Art training: The Gammell/Lack tradition and the DuMond/Reilly tradition. Mr. Richards will present a historical ov...erview of traditional painting, explaining important links from teacher to student. Mr. Gjertson will discuss his 29-year project to paint a six panel installation for the Nokomis Heights Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He will illustrate his presentation with preliminary studies as well as images of the final work. Mr. Armes will discuss his background and training, focusing on how he paints an academic landscape. He will show numerous painting demonstrations in a step-by-step manner beginning with the field sketch and culminating with the finished painting. The artists will remain for a panel discussion, welcoming questions from those in attendance.”

The Winning Drawings
Drawing skills are the bedrock of good painting, and the foundation on which form and color can most truthfully be expressed. It is incumbent on the artist to routinely sharpen and develop these skills from life. The intent of this competition is to bring greater prestige and honor to those artists who have devoted time and energy to honing these abilities. It will be a pure test of drawing skills.
The draftsman who executes the most beautiful drawing will be awarded the Grand Prize accompanied by the title, Apelles. The second place prize includes the title, Protogenes. The winning draftsmen will hold these titles until the next annual competition.
