Portrait Sketch Competition Deadline is Sept. 15

The deadline for GCA's 2nd Portrait Sketch Competition has been extended to Tuesday, September 15. Back-to-school is a busy time but we hope that all of you fierce alla prima portrait painters who are interested in competing will throw your hat in the ring!

The competition will last three days from October 21 - 23, 2015. We usually host competitions during the summer but thought we would give the beautiful, bustling fall season a try!

Competition Details:
Ten painters selected from online applications will compete to paint six four hour portraits over three days. First and Second place winners will be awarded $1,000 and $500 respectively. The judges Jacob Collins and Travis Schlaht (and a third TBD) will judge the paintings as a group.

The sixty paintings will be displayed in a month-long exhibition at Eleventh Street Arts.

Congratulations GCA Scholarship Winners!

The following thirteen core students won scholarships towards their continuing studies in 2015-2016! The prizes were awarded to students for their excellent work as well for their rigorous commitment to disciplined study. Scroll down to view more images!

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund, The Alfred and Jane Ross Foundation and the Anders Larson-Toich Memorial Scholarship, GCA teachers were able to award $65,000 in scholarships!


First Prize, $5,000 scholarships were awarded to:
4th year students Katie Engberg, Andrew Payne, Charlie Mostow
3rd year students Tsultrim Tenzin, Dale Zinkowski, Raina Dai
2nd year students Savannah Tate Cuff and Mackenzie Swenson

Second Prize, $2,500 scholarships were awarded to:
4th year students Jon Brogie and Grant Perry
3rd year students Kevin Muller-Cisneros and Al Constanzo
2nd year student Addison Xu

This coming year, one core student working in Colleen Barry's figure structure class will win a $200 prize at the end of each month's pose. Colleen Barry picks the best drawing. We will post the winning drawing each month. Stay tuned...

GCA is committed to keeping tuition as affordable as possible with an annual tuition of $9,000 for full time study. Nevertheless, many core students hold part time jobs during evenings, weekends and summers--they do an incredible job keeping focused on their studies!

2015 Hudson River Fellowship - Week Two

The week started with a Nature Hike to the mouth of the Great Gulf with expert area guide Peter Minich. Peter discussed the geology of the mountains as well as many different species of plants and mushrooms.

Ken Salaz wrapped up his workshop here at Echo Lake. Fellows came to watch Ken's demo and stayed to paint alongside him.

At the end of the week fellows met at Erik and Laurens house to receive a crit by Ted Minoff and enjoy a burgers and hotdogs. S'mores anyone?

Monday evening Fellows gathered at the home of Leslie and Warren Schomaker of the Jackson Museum and Historical Society for a meet and greet. Pictured: Erik Koeppel with artists Luke Baggott, Sarah Bentley, Tony Winters and Eleni Giannopoulou.

Fellows at house #1 quickly hit it off and begin a dinner rotation. Tonight's dinner, spaghetti and chicken provided by Al Costanzo and Leeanna Chipana. 

On Tuesday Lauren Sansaricq teaches her group of workshop artists at Crawford Notch.

While Lauren Sansaricq  teaches her workshop Erik took the fellows up Mt. Willard for a view well worth the 45 minute hike.
