update from the woods

Getting into week 3 here at the Hudson River Landscape Fellowship. The days have been packed! We're up with the sun and in the field all day, many times until after sunset. Then it's a rush to cook dinner and crash out, so I haven't had much time to update the blog. Those of you reading Sadie Valeri's blog ... she brought her own internet connection device and is updating every night, (that's not fair Sadie!) I don't have any new photos of work tonight but here are some photos from the last few weeks, we're having an awesome time together. I'll try to get a bunch of good photos of the work before we're done here. Thanks to Dorian Iten & Sadie Valeri for sharing their photos for this post!

more field studies from HRLF

Still having an awesome time up at the Hudson River Landscape Fellowship! Here are some more field studies. I photographed the work in really poor lighting and am trying to see if we can organize some better documentation of the art for future blog posts.

Kaaterskill Falls: day 2

Today a bunch of us went to draw at Kaaterskill Falls, another spot made famous by the Hudson River School painters. It's just a 10 minute drive from where we are staying.

"Kaaterskill and Haines Falls" by Hermann Fuechsell 1865

"Kauterskill Falls" by S.R. Gifford 1871

"Kindred Spirits" by Asher B. Durand 1849

Here we are today, having a quiet morning before the tourists started to show up. We're focusing on close studies of nature, to learn how water behaves, how roots connect to the ground, etc. it's pretty fascinating and exciting to be out here working among a crew of super motivated artists! go team.

Hudson River Landscape Fellowship: Day 1

Reporting from Hunter, NY ... the HRLF ROCKS!!! We all arrived yesterday afternoon, there are 17 artists here, some came from far away lands like Switzerland, Italy, and Toronto. Last night we kicked it off with an inspiring slide show by Travis Schlaht & Edward Minoff along with past fellows Shane Wolf and Thomas Kegler.

Today started out bright and early, everyone was stoked to check out sunset rock, a famous spot where all the Hudson River School painters liked to work.

Just to let everyone back at GCA know ... Lauren still gets graphite all over her face within the first 5 minutes of drawing

the storm started to roll in around noon

but we didn't retreat until the thunder and lightening got super serious ... and then it started downpouring and hailing! Pretty exciting retreat off the mountain ...

with this amazing view of the Hudson River under the storm

but then the sun came out within an hour

and we all had a productive afternoon drawing in the sun
