Classical Architecture 101
On Monday nights, Richard Cameron teaches a class for GCA students and teachers that introduces the fundamental principles of classical architecture. Cameron co-founded the Institute of Classical Architecture and has taught drawing and the history of architectural theory at the Institute since its foundation in 1991.
The class has been studying renaissance drawings, with a particular focus on Michelangelo. They have also been drawing the Doric order from the treatise by James gibbs, and have done some drawing at the New York Public Library (2 blocks from school). Coming up next, the class plans to spend some time studying shadows using india ink wash rendering and getting to know the great classical buildings of New York City. Some introductory design exercises will also be covered by the end of the year.
Richard Cameron is also the co-founder of Ariel, The Art of Building. Ariel specializes in the hand drawing of architecture and design, and in high-end residential and institutional projects.

work in progress
I'll to try to post more photos of work in progress, so here is the first batch from the cast hall today.
Colleen Barry's cast painting just after she finished the underpainting or "wipe out" stage. She has just started modeling on the upper lip if you look closely. The small drawing to the left is a photocopy of her original block-in drawing. It is shrunk down so she can use it to make a small value study (not shown) which she will refer to while finishing the final painting.
Ashley Howell's cast drawing in progress
Neal Esplin just starting a block-in for his final cast drawing
A cast painting in progress by Salaz
Jiwoong Cheh (center) teaching Ecorche to Josh LaRock & Angela Cunningham
Jiwoong Cheh working with Angela Cunningham
Carla Crawford & Colleen Barry taking a snuggle break with Lucy
Colleen Barry & Will St. John experiencing canine perfection.
P.S. theres more of these photos on the GCA facebook page if you want to follow us on there too

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
The first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City was in 1762. Today it is the largest parade in the world! 50,000 people march from 44th St up 5th Ave every year. Our school is on W44th St. between 5th & 6th Avenues, so we saw a lot of action today. About 6 bagpipe troops and 3 marching bands were practicing in the street below us, which was hard to ignore so a few of us took a break from drawing to go check it out. The music and the sunshine felt so good!
