portrait drawing and painting workshop with Camie Davis

This workshop still has room for a few more students! (July 19-30) Camie Davis has been teaching full time in the core program since the beginning of GCA. She is a high energy force of motivation at the school and her classes are always fun and challenging. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

Camie Davis teaches Jedi mind tricks and portrait drawing
In this ten day work shop students will complete a thoughtfully rendered and highly refined portrait painting with interior. We will be working with the same model three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon with a one hour lunch break in between giving us sixty hours of model time over the course of the workshop. All students will start off rendering a preliminary block in sketch in graphite with a focus on accuracy and likeness. Beginning students will be encouraged to continue rendering their portrait in pencil , with the additional option of toned paper and white chalk. Advanced students may transfer their drawings to canvas and proceed with a full color portrait. The main focus of this work shop will be on providing a solid and accurate foundation with your drawing to then take further with naturalistic flesh tones and an understanding of light on form. Additional discussions on color, composition, poster studies, and aesthetics will also be offered. All steps will be previewed through instructor demonstrations.

New workshops in drapery

Drapery Workshop, Week 1: Drapery & Hair with Jiwoong Cheh
August 16-20 (5 days) 10am - 5pm
$600 ($300 deposit)
* $1150 if you sign up for both the sculpture and drawing/painting workshops in drapery.

In the world of outdoor figurative sculpture there are not many nude figures but plenty of costumed ones! Students will learn the basic logical understanding of drapery and the sculptural treatment of hair.

Beginning students will work on one project each of drapery and hair. (The class will provide 5" tall sculpture head and drapery model.)

Intermediate and advanced students will sculpt a whole body in costume from the provided mannequin (the class will provide 16" tall wooden puppet.)

We highly recommend you sign up for both the sculpting and drawing/painting courses. Sculpting drapery is a key to understanding it well enough to draw and paint it.

Drapery Workshop, Week 2: Drapery Drawing Camie Davis
August 23 - 27 (5 days) 10am - 5pm
$600 ($300)
* $1150 if you sign up for both the sculpture and drawing/painting workshops in drapery!

In week two of this drapery intensive beginning students will complete one finely rendered finished drawing of a fabric study in graphite. Advanced students are welcome to bring in an already completed figure drawing/painting they wish to add drapery to. Along with covering the purely technical aspects of drawing and painting fabric this workshop will also include; insight into aesthetic fabric/figure composition, how to draw/paint various textures; cotton, silk, fur, how to create tension in fabric and how to approach pattern.

Camie Davis in Nashville Arts Magazine

There is a very nice article about Camie Davis in the most recent issue of Nashville Arts Magazine, you can read it online at this link. The article was written by Eric Stengel, founder of Classical Arts Studio, located in Nashville, TN. Mr. Stengel reminds us that one of the greatest proponents of classical training was Andy Warhol, who helped establish the New York Academy of Art, where a disciplined approach to figurative drawing, painting, and sculpture is emphasised.

“If you teach a generation how to paint the way the masters did, you will change the art world.”

-Andy Warhol
