New! Evening Still Life Class!

Tony Curanaj is teaching an 8-session, evening still life painting class in April and May.

Course Description: This class will concentrate on many of the fundamentals of good picture-making, from the technical to the conceptual. The class will have lectures & demonstration focusing on different topics as well as individual critiques while the student paints his or her own still life set-up. For those who wish to focus on the simple fundamentals of drawing and painting, there will be a set up consisting of geometric shapes and colors. Some of the principles addressed will be composition, accuracy in drawing, color and color theory, understanding form and modeling, edge control, glazing/scumbling techniques, lighting, materials and good studio practice.

Sabin Howard Book Launch

The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art will present a book launch and manifesto reading on Friday March 2nd, 2012 . The ICAA and the Italian Academy Foundation  have teamed up and will honor Sabin Howard, And The Classical Art of Sculpture. A panel discussion will be led by  Comm. Stefano Acunto, Hon. Vice Consul, Republic of Italy with the art critics and writers: James F. Cooper, Director, Newington-Cropsey Foundation Cultural Studies Center and Editor, American Arts Quarterly and Peter Trippi, Editor, Fine Arts Connoisseur; as well as internationally acclaimed and award-winning author Traci L. Slatton. The evening will feature a presentation and reception celebrating the publication of THE ART OF LIFE, written by sculptor, Sabin Howard and his wife Traci L. Slatton. The Hon. Stefano Acunto will also read an art manifesto: Towards An Apollonian Renaissance followed by a discussion with this distinguished panel..After the event there will be an exhibit of Sabin Howard's sculpture till March 25th in the ICAA offices on the third floor.
The ICAA is located at 20 w. 44^th and the reception will begin at 6:00 PM.

Rome Through the Eyes of Piranesi: Drawing and Painting Tour June 9-16 2012

Join experienced instructors of the ICAA and affiliated institutions for this opportunity to experience Rome while honing your observational drawing and painting skills. Participants at all levels will be provided with a practical knowledge of the classical tradition as manifested in Rome, and ample opportunity for the observation and representation of classical architecture. This signature study and drawing tour is open to all architects, artists, and like-minded individuals. Credit hours from this trip may be counted toward the 
completion of the Certificate in Classical Architecture.

MET Museum Copying Class Starts Mid-March!

Mark Tennant returns to GCA to teach a two-month copying class at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The class runs from March 14 - May 2, meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 - 4:30pm.

Description:
Rising artists must look to the great masters of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries for guidance and make themselves familiar with the works of every school in order to cultivate their tastes and form their style. Through museum copying, the student learns to look at nature from the point of view of the best art and compare their own efforts with those that have stood the test of time; to aim at the highest. The student will not only try to see how a painter did a certain thing but why. So that as they copy, they will follow the master in the working out of the problems and, consequently, make it their problem as well. One painting will be copied over a period of eight days at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Demonstrations and lecture will cover such topics as construction, value relationships (monochrome), warm and cool colors.

Upcoming NYC Park Landscape Workshops!

For you city-folk interested in learning the pre-impressionist methods and ideas explored by the Hudson River Fellowship, GCA has scheduled two local workshops in late spring and early-summer. The workshops will be held in NYC's rugged Inwood Park at the northern tip of Manhattan. Instructors are Senior Fellows of the Hudson River Fellowship.

Congratulations 2012 Landscape Fellows!

Congratulations to the twenty-five artists who have been selected to explore the White Mountains of New Hampshire together--collaborating in their studies of nature through observation, drawing and painting!  In addition to sharing their work in the field and during weekly potluck gatherings, they will be living communally in one of several ski chalets filled with bunk beds and amazing views! Jacob Collins will be in attendance for the beginning of the Fellowship. Senior Fellows Tom Kegler, Erik Koeppel, Lauren Sansaricq will be participating this year as well as teaching in concurrent workshops.
