Portrait drawing class with skulls

For our Tuesday afternoon portrait class, we've been posing skulls next to the model and drawing the two simultaneously. The idea is to be able to recognize the structure of the skull in the live model and see through the skin and muscles while drawing. Students are also encouraged to do many many studies of the skull from all angles on their own time (see David Troncoso's examples below) Sculpting the skull in clay is also part of the curriculum. The model poses for 20 minutes at a time, with 5 minute breaks. No breaks for the artists! (or the skulls)

end of the year student work, part 1

Yesterday was the last day of class for students in the core program before summer break and the workshop schedule which starts right away on Monday. Each student has submitted their 3 best pieces of the year for a student exhibition which is open to the public June 8-12. I'll be posting images of all the submitted work here on the blog, which will take several installments, so stay tuned!

more work in progress

Instructor Tony Curanaj finished this still life demo in class yesterday. Tony teaches painting and drawing on a weekly basis in the core program. He is also teaching a still life painting workshop this summer from June 15-26. There is still time to sign up if you are interested!

Monday's portrait class has spent the last few weeks studying the skull.
