new work by Jiwoong Cheh

Sculpture instructor Jiwoong Cheh brought in this recently finished piece to share with us yesterday. It's about 15" wide and 30" long at the base. Really amazing!

What's the point? Jiwoong Cheh's work is beautiful, and his display of knowledge concerning human anatomy is amazing, but one is left wondering if that's all there is. There's no narrative in his work. What is the man portrayed in the sculpture supposed to represent? Why the look of anguish in his eyes? Why the clenched fist turned at an odd angle. Had the figure been holding an object to narrate the reason for his anguish, the sculpture would have been better. JMHO.

Hey Bob--the sculpture title is "Gen 3:21". The sculpture, in my opinion, works on so many narrative levels it's pretty exciting.

(One of my favorite parts is that, as I see it anyhow, the pose is suggestive of a mirror image of Michelangelo's 'Creation of Man'. Just my interp.)
